  • Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Spain’s Second Vice President and Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, to Copreci.

During her visit to our facilities in Aretxabaleta, she offered reassurance in light of the tariffs affecting our activity and reaffirmed her support for cooperativism and local industry: "No companies will be shut down, and no jobs will be lost. We will be where we are needed."

Beyond the impact, at Copreci we also see opportunities: under the current tariff framework, Mexico becomes the main beneficiary, with no tariffs on components — unlike the US, Europe, or China.

  • Yesterday we received at Copreci the visit of a group of engineering students from the University of Deusto, a diverse group covering areas such as mechanics, design, industrial organisation, electronics, automation, computer science.....

  • Char-Broil, american company leader in the production of outdoor cooking brands, is customer of Copreci since the eighties. Christine Robins, president and chief executive of the company, supported by Jeff Wells (Global Supply Chain senior director), has visited this week Copreci in Aretxabaleta.

Char-Broil is part of WC Bradley group, pioneer company founded in 1885 in Columbus (Georgia). Copreci start supplying them gas taps in 1985 and Char-Broil become a preferential client. In 1989, Copreci set up in Mexico to offer better service to Char-Broil, and that was the first international experience for Copreci. Years later, in 2004, Copreci was set up in China, and removed there some production chains from Mexico, due to the demand of this client. So, besides being preferential client, Char-Broil is an excelent tripmate in the internationalitation process of Copreci.

Robins has worked many years as promoter in Bodymedia and Philips Oral Healthcare. Consequently, both of them grew during those periods. Finally, she became the chief executive of Char-Broil in june of 2014. Acording to this visit, we have had the chance to make her a little interview, and she has spoken about the historical "partner" relationship between Char-Bloir and Copreci, as well as the impact that MONDRAGON cooperative experience has given to her, and about the role of women in several responsability workplaces in the companies.

  • Last week took place the CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas, where Weber introduced its latest innovation: a smart BBQ that features an electronic ignition and gas control system developed by Copreci.

The Weber Connect Smart Grilling system allows the digital regulation of the flame through a simple cell phone or the BBQ display itself, opening a world of possibilities for the management of the grill, from the control of the temperature of the food in real time, sending notifications to the smartphone, access to recipes.....

At the heart of the BBQ Summit is the electronic system integrated in the gas valves, designed by Copreci to control the power of the flame, detect the presence of the flame on the burners and the infrared (IR) grill. Automatically, SmartControl technology resets the flame when necessary, ensuring a safe and continuous grilling experience.

This technology offers around 600 recipes, guided cooking programs, and automatic alerts and letting Smartphones notify when your food is ready. Thus, the BBQ Summit is designed to meet the highest culinary demands.

  • The visit took place under the Ecuadorian government's “Efficient cooking” programme which aims to replace 3.5 million gas cookers with induction cookers. The minister visited Copreci within the context of an ambitious nationwide plan to change the energy matrix, which aims to reduce imports of liquid petroleum gas and take advantage of the surplus electrical energy from new hydroelectric power stations.

The "Efficient cooking" programme is fundamental to such change, which aims to replace approximately 3.5 gas cookers with electrical induction models.

Copreci is participating in the project by supplying induction generators in conjunction with the Ecuadorian Ministry of Industry and local electrical appliance manufactures (Mabe, Induglob, Fibroacero, DME, Ferromedica,...). The cooperative has d specifically developed a product platform to cater for the needs of the Ecuadorian market. The progressive implementation of the plan will entail a significant growth in business at its Aretxabaleta plant over the coming years, and with it new jobs.

The project also represents an excellent business opportunity for Fagor Electrónica and the Eika cooperative, as suppliers of components to Copreci.

Minister Ramiro Gonzalez, accompanied on the visit by Josemi Arregi, vice-president of MONDRAGON, and Javi Oleaga, general manager of Copreci, was pleasantly surprised and highlighted the idea of making MONDRAGON Componentes a “strategic partner for Ecuadorian industry in the sector, with a potential market of over 3 million induction cookers by 2018”.
